Three Ways To Survive Holiday Emotions

It's the most emotional time of the year. Whether you love them, hate them, or have a complicated relationship with them, the holidays have a way of prying open floodgates of feelings. I'm no exception.

Here are my three go-to self-care tricks that keep me grounded, merry, and sane over the holidays. I hope they help!

1. Take a Breath

Take five minutes in the morning and five minutes before bed to breathe, by yourself. This is especially useful when you're traveling and not staying in your own place. I recommend alternating nostril breathing because it's very grounding and delivers a powerful dose of peace and sanity. You can watch this video to learn how to do it!

2. Say No

Say no to the extra glass of wine, beer, or Irish Coffee that you will inevitably be offered. If you're feeling extra sensitive, reduce your alcohol intake. It seems counterintuitive because we equate drinking with drowning our feelings. But it turns out that drinking alcohol can actually make us feel more anxious.

3. Smell the Candy Canes

Go on, take a whiff of the candy cane Santa brought you! Peppermint is used in aromatherapy to lift your spirits. Or you can also just smell the Christmas tree because pine oil has similar effects. If you don't celebrate Christmas or if the smell of Christmas triggers painful memories, I recommend buying a rose or bunch of lavender at the local grocer. Hold them to your nose when your emotions are feeling heightened. It'll help you re-center and find a moment of peace.

I hope you have a safe, healthy, and bright Holiday!

Love, Kasey Dreier
